Video Contest Video exhibition program Visual Arts exhibition Offerings for the dead Crafts
The organizing committee of the V International Congress Women, Work and Health is aware of the importance artistic manifestations have in supporting reflection on subjects concerning humanity, which is why it has set out to offer an ample cultural supply around the Congress’s activities. Public spaces with a fitting design will be used as will be plazas: like open-cast museums with great exchange possibilities for a wide range of public. Art brings together creators and public from various latitudes to share perspectives on the issue of women, work and health, perhaps not trying to reach an agreement but enrichment. For this reason, the following international activities have been programmed:
International Video Contest on Women and Work
In collaboration with the Independent Documentary Video Spanish American Conference, Against Silence All Voices, and the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, the International Contest of Video on Woman and Work was announced. The chosen videos shall be exhibited during the Congress in open public spaces at the Zacatecas City. Then, the chosen videos shall go in itinerary to other cities of Mexico. At the video reception closing time, 77 documentaries from 13 different countries were received. The winners of the International Woman and Work Prize are:
Shared Prize:
- The Queen’s Film (O Filme Da Rainha) from Sergio Mercurio (Brazil)
- Land of Women (Tierra de mujeres) (Adriana Estrada, Mexico)
Honorable Mention:
- Angelina the Midwife (Angelina la partera) (Marta Alcocer, Mexico)
The jury was integrated by:
Bertha Navarro
María Novaro
Rafael Bonilla
Abstract from the summary published in the newspaper La Jornada on April 14, 2008
“The International Woman and Work Prize was shared by Land of Women (Tierra de mujeres) (Adriana Estrada, Mexico) and O filme da Rainha (Sergio Mercurio, Brazil). Such award, where María Novaro, Bertha Navarro and Rafael Bonilla acted as jury, was announced as unique time by the International Woman, Work and Health Congress and this newspaper.
Bonilla explained that The Queen’s Film (O filme da Rainha), about a 74 years old lady who makes pieces of art from the candy wrappers, got the prize because of the “beauty of its movie language and brilliant portrait the documentary makes from an unusual woman."
Regarding the Land of Women (Tierra de mujeres), Bonilla said that the jury had decided to grant the prize “because of the way it raises the voices from native women who are categorically transforming their own reality.”
The director woman thanked the festival “for opening such spaces to people who appear in the documentaries. The prizes are more for the stories than for the documentary makers."
The 34 years old sociologist explained to La Jornada what made her to film the documentary: “In 1994, the indigenous uprising surprised me. It allowed me to know my country.” In 1997 she went to Chiapas to study a Master, and her astonishment before the women she knew took her also toward the documentary, which was concluded in 2003. She discovered that "what we saw from outside as hooded women was sustained in a civilian movement developed in many fields: craftswomen, single mothers, teacher women..." who are portrayed in the film".

Exhibition of offerings for the celebration of the day of the dead
|
In this occasion it will be dedicated to the women passed away by labor health problems. One of the celebrations of greater cultural importance in Mexico is the Day of the Dead. From pre-Hispanic times different cultures have made offerings to their deceased. With the Spanish conquest, this tradition underwent a syncretism process that derived in what today we know as the day of the dead offerings, which are celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. Although each region has specificities, all the country celebrates this ritual. The organizing committee of the V Congress invites proposals of offerings or traditional representative acts of a region (country, state, culture). Call Altars will be in hinor of the women who lost their life because of work related diseases, accidents or violence. The altars are supported by the Zacatecas University Anthropology School and are going to be exhibited in the Alameda/Garden J. Trinidad García de la Cadena the 29th of october 20:00 hrs. Stay from 29th october to 2nd of november 2008. |
Exhibition and sale of crafts
Mexico has, all over the territory, an enormous artisan wealth. We will ask craftswomen to display a sample of their work for exhibition and sale in the facilities of the Congress.
Besides the activities before described, the congressmen and their companions are invited to be present at and to participate in local cultural activities. The information will be available months before the Congress. For the accomplishment of the cultural activities we thank the support of the Instituto Zacatecano de Cultura of the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (Zacatecan Culture Insitute of the Autonomus University of Zacatecas) and the Fototeca Regional de Zacatecas (Zacatecas Regional Phototec).
